Welcome to Hula O Kahawai ~ Hula of the Valley

Hula O Kahawai is a hula hui, or a group, based in Ashland Oregon. We present dances old (kahiko) and new (auana), using ancient and modern interpretations. We perform at public and private events in Southern Oregon, and are passionate about the culture and history of Hawai‘i. We hope you enjoy exploring our website. Mahalo!

The hula shall live forever in the hearts of those
who dance it and in the hearts of those who have witnessed it.

February, 2009 ~ A Note from Hula O Kahawai...

It's exciting how the awareness of hula and Hawaiian culture is growing ~ from our new Hawaiian born President Obama, to the increasing interest in hula and Hawaiian music here in the Rogue Valley. Hula O Kahawai is also experiencing new growth and changes.

Introducing Ka Pi'o O Ke Ānuenue

We are pleased to announce that one of our dancers/members, Andrea Luchese, is now teaching hula classes as part of a new hula hui, Ka Pi'o O Ke Ānuenue.  Andrea describes the name:

"Pi'o" is arch. "Ānuenue" is rainbow, which symbolizes the presence of gods, chiefs, and chiefesses. The arch of the rainbow is planted in the Earth, but rises to the Heavens.  Ānuenue also represents to me the bridging of cultures and of time, as it is my intention to both honor tradition while moving forward (imua!) with hula as a living art form that evolves and grows as we do.

Visit here for more information.  We wish Andrea all the best in this new endeavor and look forward to her continuing participation as a performing dancer in Hula O Kahawai.
